The Great King Gruit – Winter Star Ale Beer Kit (Extract) is more than just a seasonal beer, it’s a brew pulled straight from the pages of our original comic, The Adventures of Dr. Mystein. In one of the most unforgettable holiday issues, Santa Claus himself delivers an ancient scroll to Dr. Mystein: a mysterious, crumbling parchment said to contain the lost brewing recipe of St. Nicholas. With a few modern tweaks (and a lab explosion or two), the doctor deciphers the formula and recreates a winter gruit fit for a mythic king. That fictional recipe? It’s now real. This kit is a rare case of life imitating art—where storytelling, imagination, and centuries-old brewing tradition come together in your fermenter.
The beer itself is a unique twist on gruit, the ancient style brewed with herbs and spices instead of traditional hop bitterness. A fragrant blend of ginger root, cinnamon sticks, and a touch of wormwood gives this ale a warming, festive character that lingers long after the glass is empty. Honey smooths the body while golden light extract and Bonlander Munich malt provide a rich, malty base with subtle caramel depth. Just a kiss of Cascade hops keeps everything in balance without overpowering the delicate botanicals. With a few extra weeks of aging, the flavors mellow and meld into something magical, just as the scroll foretold. You’re not just brewing a beer here. You’re bringing a legend to life.

- 1 oz. Cascade Hops ( 25 mins.)
Instructions
1. Heat 3-4 gallons of water to 155°F.
2. Add the grains to the grain bag and steep for 25-30 minutes.
3. Remove the grains and stir in dry malt extracts until fully dissolved.
4. Bring wort back up to a rolling boil.
