A Lil Bitter Business IPA is a classic American IPA with bright citrus hops, clean bitterness, light caramel sweetness, and a toasted malt backbone. Modeled after Lagunitas IPA, this beer kit gives you an assertive but highly drinkable IPA with enough hop character to satisfy IPA fans without becoming harsh.

Golden Light Dry Malt Extract provides a clean golden base, while Munich Dark Malt adds toasted bread crust, biscuit, and subtle malt depth. Caramel Malt 10L and 40L bring light sweetness, amber color, and a gentle caramel note that helps balance the hops. With an estimated SRM of 8, your finished beer should pour golden to light amber with a sturdy off-white head.

The hop schedule builds classic West Coast-style character. Nugget hops provide firm bitterness with earthy, herbal, and resinous notes. Cascade adds grapefruit, citrus peel, and floral flavor, while late additions of Cascade and Centennial bring fresh lemon, orange rind, pine, and bright hop aroma.

SafAle US-05 keeps fermentation clean and crisp, allowing the hops and malt to stay front and center. At 5.7% to 6.0% ABV and 54 IBUs, this IPA finishes dry, refreshing, and pleasantly bitter.

Expect aromas of grapefruit, pine, citrus zest, toasted malt, and light caramel. Your first sip starts with a touch of malt sweetness before the hops move in with citrus, resin, and a clean bitter finish.

INGREDIENTS 

Malt Extracts:

- 6 lbs. Golden Light Dry Malt Extract 

 

Specialty Malts: ***Combined into one bag***

- 1 lb Munich Dark Malt

- 8 oz. Caramel Malt 10L

- 4 oz. Caramel Malt 40L

 

Hops: ***Substitutions based on availability***

- 1 oz. Nugget Hops

- 2 oz. Cascade Hops

- 2 oz. Centennial Hops

 

Yeast:***Substitutions based on availability***

- 1 packet dry yeast (SafAle US-05)

 

Also Included:

- 5 oz. Priming Sugar

- Yeast Energizer / Irish Moss Combo Packet

- Muslin Grain Bag

    HOPS SCHEDULE    

- 60 minutes: 1 oz. Nugget Hops (Bittering)
- 15 minutes: 1 oz. Cascade Hops (Flavor)
- 10 minutes: ½ oz. Cascade Hops (Aroma)

- 10 minutes: ½ oz. Centennial Hops (Aroma)
- 5 minutes: ½ oz. Cascade Hops (Aroma)

- 5 minutes: ½ oz. Centennial Hops (Aroma)

- 1 oz. Centennial Hops (3-4 Days) - Dry Hop

INSTRUCTIONS

 

1. Heat 2-3 gallons of water to 155°F.
2. Place grains in a grain bag and steep in the hot water for 30 minutes.
3. Remove the grain bag, sparge (rinse) with hot water into the wort, and discard.
4. Add the malt extracts and stir until fully dissolved.
5. Bring the wort up to a rolling boil.
6. Add the hops according to the hop schedule.
7. Boil for 60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
8. At 15 minutes add Yeast Energizer / Irish Moss Combo Packet.
9. Cool the wort to 70°F. An immersion chiller or ice bath works well for this.
10. Transfer the wort to a fermenter and top off with clean, filtered water to 5 gallons.
11. Pitch the yeast and seal the fermenter.
12. Ferment at 68-70°F for 7-10 days.

13. Transfer to a secondary fermenter and dry hop for 4-5 days.
14. Transfer to a bottling bucket and stir in 5 oz. priming sugar and mix until evenly distributed and bottle your beer.
15. Once bottled, allow 2 weeks for carbonation in a cool, dark room. Enjoy!
