Description
Your Black Forest Stout draws deep notes of dark chocolate and roasted coffee from its grain bill of pale malt, roasted barley, chocolate malt, caramel malt, and black patent malt. Northern Brewer at 60 minutes supplies clean bitterness while Fuggle at 15 minutes adds a gentle earthy aroma that settles into the dense malt body. SafAle S-04 ferments cleanly so the roasted and caramel flavors remain prominent, giving you a smooth, full-bodied stout with lingering richness.

"I brewed the wort, cooled it to 67 F, and pitched the yeast. 12 hours later it was starting to ferment. The next day, the lid on my fermenter was off and the beer was foaming vigorously. I cleaned off the lid, sanitized it and placed it loosely on the fermenter. Foam continued to displace the lid and overflow the fermenter. So, I cleaned off and sanitized the lid. I placed the fermenter in a batch of 64 F water with the lid in-place. After a couple of hours, the fermentation slowed significantly. Over the next couple of days, I monitored the progress of the beer and noticed that fermentation continued to slow. By the third day, the bubbling in the airlock had almost completely stopped. On the fourth day, I measured the SG and found that the beer was at the final gravity. I think I'll give it another day before I transfer the beer to a carboy, mix in the priming sugar and bottle it. It went a lot fast than I thought it would. For reference, the initial reading was 15. 1 BRIX. Final was 8. 6 BRIX. That equates to OG of 1. 062 and FG of 1. 017."
