This 10 lb pack of Briess Carapils Malt suits multi-batch homebrew and small-craft production, giving you mid-volume inventory without a full sack commitment.
Briess Carapils Malt 10 lb (also called Dextrin Malt or Carafoam) is a unique dextrin malt specifically designed to improve body, mouthfeel, foam retention, and beer stability without significantly affecting color or flavor. Produced through a proprietary process that develops high levels of unfermentable dextrins, Carapils Malt helps brewers create full bodied beers with enhanced head retention while maintaining the intended flavor profile of the base recipe. Its versatility has made it one of the most widely used specialty malts in craft brewing.
In the brewing process, Carapils® Malt contributes dextrins that increase body and mouthfeel while promoting long lasting head and improved beer stability. Because it adds very little color and only subtle malt flavor, it can be incorporated into virtually any beer style. It is commonly used in Pilsners, Blonde Ales, Pale Ales, IPAs, Wheat Beers, Cream Ales, and low gravity beers where additional body and head retention are desired.
What makes Briess Carapils Malt unique compared to traditional crystal malts is its ability to improve beer structure without adding significant sweetness, caramel flavor, or color. While crystal malts such as Caramel 10L or Caramel 20L contribute caramelized sugar flavors and darken the beer, Carapils® Malt focuses almost exclusively on enhancing mouthfeel, foam stability, and body. This allows brewers to build texture and improve head retention without altering the flavor balance or appearance of the finished beer.
Compared to flaked grains such as oats or wheat, Carapils Malt provides similar body enhancing benefits while offering easier mash integration and a more neutral flavor contribution.
Usage Rate: Typically 3 - 10% of the grist
- 3 - 5%: Improved head retention and foam stability
- 5 - 8%: Enhanced body and mouthfeel
- 8 - 10%: Fuller texture and increased beer stability
Color (Lovibond): 1.3°L
Diastatic Power: 0° Lintner
Flavor Notes: Neutral malt, subtle grain sweetness, light cracker
Briess Carapils Malt is an excellent choice for brewers looking to improve body, foam retention, and overall beer quality without adding color or significant flavor. Its ability to enhance mouthfeel while remaining virtually invisible in the finished beer makes it a valuable ingredient in everything from delicate lagers to hop-forward IPAs and specialty craft beer styles.

Great grain
"I've ordered grain from Label Peelers multiple times and they are always great. Timely and great products."
Solved a problem for me
"After going from extract to all-grain in a RIMS system, I noticed that a lot of my beers didn't seem to get much of a head on them. They tasted fine, they just lacked a nice creamy head. Adding some high-acid hops helped a little. Reducing the leval of adjuncts (in beers that included them, like Belgian styles) helped a little, but nothing really "fixed" the problem. Adding four ounces of Carapils or Melanoidin malts made the difference. Now my beers have nice creamy heads that last a while. Recommend this malt for that purpose. Won't change your beer flavor (at least it hasn't mine) but gives you a nice head."
very nice, 3 wks in
"very nice, 3 wks in ferment and it is delicious"
