Briess Unmalted Roasted Barley 50 lb Crushed is a classic roasted brewing grain made from unmalted barley that has been roasted to an intense dark color. Unlike roasted malts, which begin as malted barley, roasted barley is produced directly from raw barley, resulting in a bold roasted character that is a defining feature of many traditional Irish and British beer styles. It contributes deep color and robust flavors of coffee, espresso, dark chocolate, and dry roast while creating the distinctive appearance and flavor associated with dry stouts and other dark ales.
In the brewing process, Unmalted Roasted Barley is primarily used to impart color and roasted flavor rather than fermentable extract. It produces a deep ruby black to opaque black color and contributes a dry, crisp roast character that can enhance complexity and balance sweetness from crystal malts. It is a signature ingredient in Irish Stouts, Dry Stouts, Foreign Extra Stouts, Porters, and numerous specialty dark beer styles.
What makes Briess Unmalted Roasted Barley unique compared to Briess Black Malt is its sharper, drier roast profile. While Black Malt contributes roasted flavors with notes of dark chocolate, burnt toast, and coffee, Unmalted Roasted Barley delivers a more pronounced espresso-like character with greater roast intensity and a cleaner, drier finish. Compared to dehusked roasted malts such as Blackprinz Malt, it provides significantly more roast bitterness and traditional stout character. Brewers often choose Roasted Barley when authentic Irish style roast flavor is desired.
Because it is unmalted, Roasted Barley contains no meaningful enzymatic activity and is used solely for color and flavor contribution.
