Black Malt

Black malt is one of the darkest roasted malts, used to add intense color and sharp roast character. It yields deep brown to nearly black hues and bold notes of burnt toast, espresso, and a firm, dry bitterness.

It contributes little or no fermentable sugar and is used primarily for color and flavor impact. In larger amounts it helps define stouts and dark porters; in small amounts it can tweak color and add a crisp roasted edge without dominating the flavor profile of the beer.
