Coffee Malt
Coffee malts are roasted to emphasize smooth, coffee-like character without the harsher bitterness of darker grains. They add deep brown color plus notes of roasted coffee, cocoa, and lightly toasted grain. Like other roasted malts, they contribute acidity and lower mash pH, but typically less than black malt or roasted barley.
Compared to black malt or roasted barley, coffee malts are more balanced and approachable, making them easier to use without overpowering the beer. They’re ideal for porters, stouts, and dark ales where you want layered roast complexity with a smoother finish, and in small amounts they add subtle depth while offering a gentler, easier-to-manage pH effect.
