  • Beer Style: ESB (extra special bitter)
  • Recipe Type: all-grain
  • Yield: 5 US gallons

YOUR BBB ESB (FULLER'S CLONE) KIT CONTENTS

  • 1 -  London ESB Yeast
  • Priming Sugar
  • Pale Ale 2-Row Malt 9 LB
  • Caramel 80L Malt 1 LB
  • Caramel 40L Malt 1/2 LB
  • 1 - Willamette Hop Pellet 1 oz  (60 min.)
  • 1 - UK Northern Brewer Hop Pellets 1 oz  (14 min.)
  • 1 - UK Fuggle Hop Pellets 1 oz (8 min.)
  • 1 - UK Kent Goldings  Hop Pellets 1 oz (dry hop)

    Instructions:

    1. Combine grains in mash tun (add rice hulls to prevent stuck runoff if included).
    2. Heat mash to 158 F (heat water to 168 to get mash at 158).
    3. Mash for 90 minutes. Drain into brew pot. Sparge at 180 F
    4. Bring wort to a boil. This will be a 60 min boil. FOLLOW HOP SCHEDULE.
    5. Remove from heat. Steep all hops for 5 minutes and then remove and squeeze bag.
    6. Cool hot wort to below 75 degrees by either placing boil pot in cold ice water (cold break) or by using a wort chiller. Siphon the wort into a 6.5 gallon or bigger fermentation vessel containing enough water to total 5 ¼ - 5 ½ total gallons. The extra is for sediment loss.
    7. Take hydrometer reading and pitch yeast. Ferment about 65-75 degrees for 7-10 days. Longer if you are on the cooler side.
    8. Siphon beer into a 5-gal carboy and top up if necessary to about 1-2 inches below cap or bung. Affix airlock and cover to keep light out and let clear for 2-4 weeks.
    9. Dissolve the priming sugar in approximately 1 cup of warm water. Add to the bottom of the bottling bucket. Then carefully siphon beer into the same bucket. Be careful not to move carboy too much while it is siphoning. Take a final hydrometer reading while siphoning into bucket. Fill bottles to 1 inch from top of bottle. Store beer at 65-75 degrees for 14 days minimum to ensure carbonation. Enjoy!

star sanSanitizer and Spray Bottle

Good sanitation practices are absolutely fundamental to good beer making. Five Star San is the premier sanitizer you will need to make your BBB - ESB (Fuller's Clone) beer kit. A great practice for extra protection is to have a spray bottle filled with sanitizing solution so you can re-sanitize everything that touches or goes near your beer. Sanitation is much more difficult with beer than wine because beer has a higher pH. Wine's high acidity makes bacterial infection less likely but with beer, one small mishap can cost you your batch.

When your BBB - ESB (Fuller's Clone) is done, you will need bottles. This standard 12 ounce bottle is a good choice. You will need 54 for a 5 gallon batch. Bottles do not come with caps.

Carboys

The 5 gallon carboy pictured here is the standard size for any beer kit. If you have never worked with a carboy, it is important to know they should not be moved full without a carboy handle or a carrier.

The pot pictured is an 8 gallon pot that is perfect for any beer kit or a standard 5 gallon batch.

wart-chiller.pngWort Chillers and Thermometers

Wort Chillers and Thermometers are long term investments. It is important to chill your BBB - ESB (Fuller's Clone) wort quickly. The quicker you chill it the stronger the cold break will be. You also need a good thermometer that reads fast temperature fluctuations.

SiphonsSiphons

Auto-siphons are a great luxury item to have in your brew equipment. Once you have one you will never go without it again. Don't forget to use a heavy duty sanitizer to clean it since you don't want to replace it as often as hoses. A good sanitizer for that job is Five Star San.

FermenterFermenters

The fermenter pictured here is standard for a 5 gallon beer kit.

minijet-tubing-34987-97929.jpgHoses

Many people reuse their hoses for far too long. Replacing your hoses often or even using as single use items is highly recommended with beer making. Hoses are very hard to clean and beer is very susceptible to bacterial infection. You do not want to risk losing your BBB - ESB (Fuller's Clone) over a few feet of unsanitary hose.

Pouring your wort into a carboy can be tricky. Use a big funnel made just for the job. They even have different mesh screens to remove particles.

AirlocksAirlocks

It is recommended to replace airlocks often. Because they never physically touch the beer, the sanitation risk is too often overlooked. Bacteria can spread without physical contact in a closed environment and plastic stubbornly harbors bacteria.

6.5 stopperStoppers and Bungs

Bungs and stoppers should also be periodically replaced. They can dry out and harbor bacteria.

 carboy brushCarboy Brush

Keeping your carboy clean before and after use is key to avoid bacterial infection in your beer. A carboy brush is a great tool to get into those nooks and crannies.

bottle-washer.pngStainless Steel Carboy and Bottle Washer

Stainless Steel Carboy and Bottle Washer is a convenient way of cleaning your bottles and/or carboys.  This high quality tool will come in handy.  Hooks up straight to your faucet with the bottle washer adapter (#4804) and puts out plenty of pressure to clean those stubborn stains from beer bottles that have been sitting around.

bottle capperCapper

When you bottle your BBB - ESB (Fuller's Clone), you will need to cap your bottles. This capper is inexpensive, easy to use and does not require attaching to a counter. It has a magnet to hold the cap in place.
