Base Malts

Base malts are the foundation of your beer. They make up the majority of the grain bill and provide the fermentable sugars that drive alcohol production. What defines a base malt is its enzymatic power. These grains have the ability to convert their own starches, and often those of other grains, into usable sugars during the mash.

They also establish the core flavor, color, and body of your beer, from clean and crisp to rich and malty. Within this category, you will find traditional base malts like Pilsner and 2 Row, along with alternative and kilned base malts such as Wheat, Rye, Munich, and Vienna. Choosing the right base malt is the first step in shaping your finished beer.
